The Non-Negotiable Body: What Wearing Waist Beads Taught Me About Honoring Myself
Share
Let me tell you something nobody really says out loud.
Most of us were never taught to honor our bodies. We were taught to manage them. Fix them. Cover them. Shrink them. Make them acceptable enough to be loved. We spent years, some of us decades, living inside skin we hadn't fully claimed yet, waiting for someone else to tell us we were worthy of being seen.
And then somewhere between the heartbreak and the healing, something changed.
For me, part of that change came in the form of a strand of crystal waist beads. Which sounds simple. Maybe even silly if you've never worn them. But if you have? You already know.
Waist beads aren't jewelry. They're a conversation.
The practice of wearing waist beads is rooted in West African tradition; worn by women as a symbol of femininity, spirituality, and self-awareness. They've been used to mark milestones, connect women to their bodies, and honor the sacredness of the feminine form for centuries. This isn't a trend. This is ancestral wisdom that a lot of us are finally coming back to.
When I started wearing waist beads intentionally, not just as an accessory but as a practice... something shifted in how I related to my own body. I stopped looking at myself through someone else's eyes. I started noticing my body. How she moved. How she felt. What she carried.
That's not something a man gave me. That's something I gave myself.
Honoring your body starts with presence.
So many women who have loved hard and lost themselves in relationships are disconnected from their physical selves. Not because they don't care about their bodies, but because somewhere along the way, their body became something that existed for someone else. Dressed for him. Sized for his preferences. Touched on his timeline.
Healing that disconnect is slow, sacred work. And it starts with presence, with actually being in your body instead of just carrying it around.
Waist beads help with that. When you feel them shift as you move, when you catch a glimpse of them in the mirror, when you reach down and they're still there, those are micro-moments of body awareness. Of saying I am here. This body is mine. She deserves to be adorned.
That is not vanity. That is reclamation.
Why I named the strand "Non-Negotiable."
When I created the Non-Negotiable strand for The Vybe Collection, I was thinking about a specific woman. She's been through it. She knows what it feels like to have her needs dismissed, her body scrutinized, her worth questioned by someone who was never qualified to assess it. She's healing, but some days healing feels like a full-time job with no days off.
She needed a reminder she could wear.
The crystals in this strand were chosen intentionally; each one carrying energy around self-worth, boundaries, and grounded feminine power. Every time she puts it on, she's making a declaration: My body is sacred. My standards are set. I am not available for anything that requires me to be less than whole.
That's the Vybe. That's the whole point.
Honoring yourself looks like choosing yourself.. every single day.
It looks like wearing something beautiful just because you want to. It looks like standing in the mirror and not immediately looking for flaws. It looks like moving your body in ways that feel good to you, not to earn anything, not to shrink anything, just because she deserves to be moved with love.
You don't have to have it all figured out. You don't have to be fully healed to start honoring yourself. You just have to be willing to begin.
Put on the beads. Light the candle. Take up the space.
Your body has carried you through things she should have never had to carry. The least she deserves is your reverence.
Love yourself, protect your energy, and deal with life's BS with grace and gratitude.
